Tudor Manor Dignity
BLACKPOOL MAYOR, JOAN GREENHALGH, HC-ONE CARE HOME RESIDENT- A SYMBOL OF DIGNITY IN CARE
Joan Greenhalgh, Mayor of Blackpool and current resident at HC-One care home Tudor Manor in South Shore, Blackpool, will be helping her fellow residents celebrate National Dignity Action Day today.
Despite suffering a stroke which left her in a wheelchair, Joan became Mayor of Blackpool in May 2011. From the comfort of HC-One’s Tudor Manor care home, Joan receives the support she needs to not only excel in the face of adversity following her stroke, but also to lead an entire community. As a Labour Councillor for 20 years, Joan has never shied away from standing up for what she believes.
Dignity Action Day aims to ensure people in care are treated as individuals, are given choices and a sense of purpose in their daily lives and are provided with stimulating activities. Joan, a resident of Tudor Manor since August 2010, is a shining symbol of dignity in care.
Following her stroke Joan was encouraged to return to Council meetings and was supported by her family and Tudor Manor Activities Co-ordinator, Michelle Kay. Since becoming Mayor, Joan has regularly met up to three political commitments each day with Tudor Manor staff ensuring that Joan has full support while fulfilling all of her duties.
In addition to her mayoral responsibilities, Joan continues in her role as Councillor of Clifton Ward, Blackpool, and chairs Council meetings every 6 weeks. With the support of her secretary and the staff at HC-One Tudor Manor Joan has truly become an inspiration to a community and a woman who exemplifies the spirit of Dignity Action Day.
Joan Greenhalgh, Mayor of Blackpool, said:
“It is a privilege to serve my community and I thank the staff at HC-One for all of their encouragement and support. I know first-hand how much those being supported by care homes have to give and Dignity Action Day is a fantastic way to highlight this.”
Anne-Marie Potter, Tudor Manor Care Home Manager, said:
“Dignity Action Day helps our residents to convey an important message – that each of us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. It has been a privilege supporting the Mayor over the past 18 months.”
