When Care Becomes Control
A woman living in a care home has a close relationship with her daughter.
The daughter visits regularly and is very involved in her mum’s care.
Over time, staff notice that whenever her mum wants to do something, she looks at her daughter first.
She wants to join an activity, but her daughter says:
“Mum gets tired easily. She’s better staying in.”
She wants to choose what to wear, but her daughter says:
“That’s not really suitable for you anymore.”
She asks staff if she can have her own bank card, but her daughter responds:
“You can’t manage money. I’ll look after it for you.”
When staff ask the daughter about this, she becomes upset:
“I’m only protecting my mum. I know her better than anyone.”
The woman rarely disagrees with her daughter.
But when the daughter isn’t there, she quietly tells a member of staff:
“I don’t want to upset her.”
