WWYD? – Respect for choice v Duty of care
An 88-year-old resident prefers to stay awake through most of the night, quietly walking around the home or sitting in lounges and corridors. They seem content and show no signs of distress, unless staff try to encourage him to go to his bed.
This results in him sleeping until lunchtime, being verbally abusive to staff if they try to wake him. He often misses breakfast, which delays his morning medication. Staff are worried about the possible effects on hygiene, hydration, continence, skin integrity, mobility, and overall wellbeing.
Night staff say,
“They’re making their own choice and they’re happy - don’t poke the bear.
Day staff argue, It’s their choice, but we have to address the risks?
What would YOU do?
