Some argue this is essential for safety and compliance. Others question whether recording every detail for independent individuals is intrusive and risks undermining dignity and autonomy.

“At what point does monitoring become a barrier to independence?”

How do we balance safety, compliance, and accountability with dignity, privacy, and independence?
“I would balance accurate record-keeping with the resident’s right to privacy, dignity and independence. Information that is necessary for the person’s health, safety and care should be recorded accurately, but staff should avoid recording unnecessary or overly personal details.
I would explain to the resident why information is being recorded and respect their wishes wherever possible. Records should be kept confidential and only shared with people who need the information for their care.
Monitoring should support the person rather than make them feel watched or controlled. The aim is to maintain safety and accountability while still allowing the resident to have choice, privacy and independence.”
