WHAT WOULD YOU DO, RESPONSIBILITY?
WWYD - who is responsible?
Staff become concerned about a service user. They notice the person is much more unwell than usual — quieter, not eating properly and becoming increasingly weak.
The staff contact the GP and clearly explain their concerns.
They are told the GP will respond.
They don’t.
The following day, the client’s condition deteriorates further.
Staff contact the GP again and explain to the receptionist that they are increasingly worried.
Still no response.
Two days after the original concern was raised, the GP finally contacts the service. Staff are left wondering:
“Did we do enough?” One says:
“We reported it. What more could we have done? Another says:
“If we remained concerned, should we have escalated it sooner?” And a third asks: Who is responsible for making sure the person is safe when the first professional we contact doesn’t respond?”
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
At what point does “we’ve reported it” become “we need to escalate this”?
Dignity?
