Polars Branching Out

Polars Residential Home raised awareness on Dignity action day by branching out in to the local community with the dignity tree to show case best practice to health carers and members of the public.

Sarah Woodford and Sheryl Parkman used the dignity tree, inspired last February as an interactive tool and offered the opportunity for everyone to write their own leaves while providing informative literature relating to the dignity challenge, becoming a dignity champion and care homes within Islecare.

“Validating feelings, respecting privacy and enjoying experiences are part of daily life at Polars”

The activity lounge is developing, with the hair salon dedicated to providing a private area which maintains the dignity for the Ladies and Gentlemen using the facility.

Residents have said they feel it is a like for like experience, which was our aim.

Polars celebrated dignity action day on the 2nd February 2012, with the opening of the in-house corner shop “choices” located in the activity lounge. The shop was designed to enable residents to re-live the shopping experience in the comfort of their own home; the shop is stocked with items requested in recent resident meetings of confectionary stationary gifts & toiletries.

This is addition to the homes mini bus service which enable residents to access the local community.

The afternoon was a celebration of the homes success through the dignity challenge, residents and staff took part in sing a long and spent time decorating ginger bread men with green leaves to maintain dignity.
