Dignity Challenge

At Sycamore Lodge, Acton, we got our 80+ staff involved by having each one personally befriend one resident. This venture included all our carers, domestic and laundry workers as well as office staff. All signed up to spend at least 15 minutes doing something nice with and for their particular resident. The week started with a large group 'music for health' session which was excellent and had something for everyone. This included playing musical instruments to 'conducting an orchestra', music quizzes, hand clapping/feet tapping and dancing.

The staff led individual sessions which went on throughout the week included having a chat, taking someone for a walk, making tea/coffee and cake for someone, doing hair/makeup, hand massage and manicures, singing, reminiscing, painting, treating someone to a pint of guinness, flowers or chocolates.

All staff who took part expressed their satisfaction and pleasure at being able to make someone happy.

The week ended with a party during which Bollywood dancers entertained residents. The positive results has truly encouraged our staff and many are planning to continue the friendships with residents for the rest of the year.
