The Neighbours of Intergenerational Housing

Hill. S.W., and Izuharab, M., Housing, Theory and Society – September 2025

"This article examines intergenerational student-senior housing in Europe and North America,  which aims to reduce social isolation among older adults and address student housing affordability. Based on analysis of 6 existing schemes, findings suggest that students often take on “neighbour-plus” roles, providing care or companionship beyond typical neighbourly expectations, which helps achieve positive social outcomes. Recommendations highlight a framework for research into elevated neighbour roles and suggest potential models for organisations seeking to implement successful intergenerational housing schemes."
