Seeing the patient not just the illness

Since it was founded more than 60 years ago medical science has transformed beyond recognition. Smallpox has been eradicated and previously deadly diseases such as polio, diphtheria and tuberculosis are increasingly rare. This progress is incredible and nobody would deny we have come on in leaps and bounds but something is missing.Amid the technical jargon and science, the human aspect of the medical and caring vocations seems to have been lost.

There appears to be a reluctance among some doctors and nurses to see the person suffering underneath the disease. It is also a question of taking responsibility. Some healthcare workers do not seem to understand the quality of patient care is everyone's responsibility, not just the specific doctor and nurse looking after them.
