Overview
Reducing inpatient falls and harm from falls remains a major patient safety priority. The 2025 National Audit of Inpatient Falls shows progress in some areas of post-fall management, but also highlights continuing variation in assessment, documentation, pain relief, safe lifting, delirium screening and organisational accountability. From January 2025, NAIF expanded to include all inpatient fall-related fractures, head injuries and spinal injuries, and its 2026 recommendation for providers to undertake a facilities audit reinforces the need for board-level oversight, specialist falls leadership and ward-level action to support patients to stay active and safe while in hospital.
