World Class Commissioning

World Class Commissioning is a government initiative to improve the quality of commissioning in health and social care. The emphasis is on evidence based, high quality care that provides service users with greater choice and control and reduces health inequalities. It has a particular focus on improving the performance of Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) as leaders and shapers of local NHS services.

Integrated approaches to commissioning are at the heart of this model. There is an expectation that PCTs will work collaboratively with community partners so that action on the wider determinants of health are understood and tackled jointly.

There is a Department of Health website that contains policy documents and also details of support available to commissioners.
