Make Chinese Paper Lanterns

Simple Paper Lantern Craft

A classic, fuss-free activity with a big visual impact.

Materials:

  • Red or gold A4 paper (or printables)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Stapler (optional)
  • Ribbon or string for hanging
  • Optional: stickers, glitter, or Chinese character printouts

Steps:

  1. Fold the paper in half lengthwise.
This creates the base for cutting slits.
  2. Cut slits along the fold.
Start about 2 cm from the edge and stop 2 cm before the opposite edge. Space slits about 1–2 cm apart.
  3. Unfold the paper.
You’ll see a row of slits down the middle.
  4. Roll the paper into a cylinder.
Bring the short edges together and secure with glue or a staple.
  5. Add a handle.
Use a strip of paper or ribbon and attach it to the top.
  6. Decorate!
Add gold stickers, Chinese characters (like 福 for good fortune), or glitt

Adaptations for Accessibility:

  • Use pre-cut slits or templates for those with limited dexterity.
  • Offer collage materials for sensory engagement.
  • Pair with a story about the Lantern Festival or zodiac animals.
