Greater Manchester

A focal point in the Roman road network. But came into its own in the mid-17th century, when cotton began to be used in fabric manufacture. Towns such as Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, and Oldham, specializing in cotton spinning, rapidly expanded, and Manchester became the major market centre. Increased demand for coal in the 18th and 19th centuries, and mining settlements grew rapidly.

The Emmeline Pankhurst’s statue is in St. Peter’s Square Manchester– it commemorates her as a leading figure of the Suffragette movement it was unveiled on the centenary of the first UK election in which women could vote, it symbolises the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the dignity of women’s rights.

Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity.  It is an act of justice.  It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.
