Wiliam Shakespeare is the first known writer in English to use the word dignity in the sense of worthiness, honour or high rank.  In the opening line of Romeo and Juliet [1597] the chorus begins “Two households, both alike in dignity”. So the very idea of dignity in English literature is rooted in the West Midlands
