The award is part of the annual Health & Social care awards that is an established part of caring professionals calendar. Each year the Health & Social Care Awards set a core criteria for nominations. The People's Award for Dignity in Care adheres to the core criteria but also sets an additional set of evidence that nominations will be judged against. For last years awards the additional set of criteria were ad follows.

- Demonstration of how the public and/or those receiving services have been directly involved with staff in bringing about improvements to services based on their respective experiences and personal feelings, especially through novel ways of listening to people receiving services and obtaining feedback
- Services that protect, support and promote the dignity in health or social care contexts, in particular, services that encourage respect, privacy, self-esteem, social inclusion and autonomy.
- Feedback from the public and/or people receiving services that they find the service to be an exceptional experience in terms of the way they have been treated with dignity and respect
