Vegetarian for Life

Vegetarian for Life is dedicated to working on behalf of older vegetarians and vegans, ensuring they are treated with dignity while in care.

The charity works to ensure that all residents in care homes can continue their dietary and lifestyle choices into later life. One of our major goals is to improve the standard of vegetarian and vegan catering across the UK.

We have a list (opens new window) of more than 1,200 care facilities and food suppliers that have pledged to cater well and ethically for older vegetarians and vegans by following our best practice guide (opens new window).

We also offer grants (opens new window) to assist older vegetarians and vegans with independent living.

Funds have been awarded to help assist people for a variety of reasons. We recently funded a mobility scooter for a man who has M.E. after his previous one broke – leaving him housebound.  We also funded a hearing aid for a 70-year-old woman who had been vegan for 30 years.

Amanda Woodvine, CEO of Vegetarian for Life said: “Being respectful of older vegans' and vegetarians’ dietary and lifestyle choices is paramount to dignity in care.

“We want older vegetarians and vegans to be able to maintain their dietary beliefs in the long-term.

“Care caterers are moving towards more options for those residents, which is fantastic.

“But currently there are only two fully vegetarian care homes in the UK. We are working towards one in six care homes being on our accredited list.

“We have come a long way since we launched 10 years ago, but there is still some way to go.”
